The Power of Chewing

Have you ever thought about how many times you chew your food? How small does it break down in your mouth? I definitely had not until I learned more about the brain and gut function. Chewing can be a great habit if you want to loose weight and a powerful way to bring your health to new levels. I also love this healthy habit since it is easy to implement.

How to:

  • Eat your dinner and pay attention and count how many times you chew. How much did you break down your food?
  • Chew slowly and steadily.
  • Chew until your mouthful of food is liquefied or lost all of its texture. That may be 30-50 times.
  • Finish chewing and swallowing completely before taking another bite of food.
  • Wait to drink fluids until you’ve swallowed

BONUS: Integrate more mindfulness by paying more attention to taste, smell, and texture of your food. 

Benefit #1 Weight Loss

It takes about 20 to 25 minutes for the hormones in your body to reach your brain and to tell you that you're full. If you eat your meal in just a few minutes, that's not enough time for your brain to register when you are full. Chewing and taking time to eat your dinner will help you to be aware of when your are full. You may eat less than you would otherwise and therefore aid you in loosing weight.

Benefit #2 Activates Your Brain

Chewing activates the brainstem which has many basic functions, including regulation of heart rate, breathing, sleeping, and eating. More specifically, chewing simulates the trigeminal nerve, cranial nerve V. The sensory function of the trigeminal nerve is to provide the tactile, motion, position, and pain sensations of the face and mouth. The motor function activates the muscles of the jaw, mouth, and inner ear and is involved functions such as biting, chewing, and swallowing.  

Benefit #3 More Efficient Gut Function

The more you chew up your food, the less mechanical work your gut has to do. The less your gut has to work the less energy wasted.
