Correct Tongue Position and Strength

brain-based drill Sep 21, 2021

Did you know that your tongue position can make your hamstring stronger? There was actually a study done in 2014 that showed that holding the correct tongue position in strength training might actually increase your strength up to 30%. When closing the mouth, the teeth should be slightly apart while the tongue rests on the roof of the mouth but, not against the teeth. Where is your tongue? It is resting on the roof?

Not sure where your tongue is?

Try these different versions:

  1. Say the word "ring" and hold the sound a little longer. Feel your tongue on the roof of your mouth.
  2. Raise your eyebrows, make a big smile, place your tongue in position and try to swallow.
  3. Make a big grin, and then practice swallowing.

Benefit #1: Increased Strength

The correct tongue position might increase your strength by up to 30%. Another study showed that holding the mouth closed, versus holding the mouth open, improved explosive power in athletes.

Benefit #2: Neck Position and Neck Stability

Poor tongue position has an influence on your neck position and neck stability, which can result in a lack of balance. If you are suffering from neck issues or want to improve your posture and balance, then try working on your tongue position.

Benefit #3: Nasal Breathing

Nasal breathing is more beneficial than mouth breathing. Breathing through your nose can help filter out dust and allergens, boost your oxygen uptake, and humidify the air you breathe in. When the tongue is not in its correct position then nasal breathing becomes much harder.

Note: if your tongue is not in position then you may have been mouth breathing more.
